Many farms have stores with fall décor or fresh produce to take home too, so don’t miss out on a little shopping hand in hand.

Finally, don’t forget that pumpkin patches have tasty treats. Share some farm fresh corn on the cob, cider donuts, or pumpkin fudge while you’re there.

2. Go to a Coffee Shop

Head out to your local coffee shop for a warm beverage and good conversation with your honey this fall. Opt for locations with fireplaces, comfy seating, and windows to view the falling leaves. How to Stay Cool in Hot Weather – Fun Summer Ideas!

How to Stay Cool in Hot Weather – Fun Summer Ideas!

Not sure how to stay cool in hot weather this summer? Check out these fun and refreshing ideas to enjoy the season.

How to Stay Cool in Hot Weather - Fun Summer Ideas - on turquoise and blue watercolor background

The greatest thing about it being so darn hot outside is there’s so many fun ways to cool off! Depending on where you live, summertime offers either the best weather ever, or the worst of the worst (super sweltering Arizona and seriously sticky Florida – I’m looking at you!).

Either way, most of us are looking for how to stay cool in hot weather so we can enjoy our summer. I’ve got all sorts of ideas for you! Come with me and we’ll look at some ways to enjoy the warm (or extremely toasty) heat. There’s something for everyone!

Enjoy the Water

There are so many ways to stay cool in hot weather and enjoying the water is at the top of my list of fun. Make sure to touch up on water safety tips with any of the below suggestions to keep everyone safe and having a good time!

How to Stay Cool in Hot Weather - Practice Water Safety - child swimming with life jacket - life preservers in water - small dog in life jacket

Head to the Pool

Check your area for pools open to the public. Recreation or Aquatic Centers are found in many cities and a great option for the whole family.

Gyms with pools are another option that offer in or outdoor pools for their members. Swimming laps and aqua aerobics are great ways to get in shape and easy on the body.

If you’re lucky enough to own a pool, look for a new pool float with cup holders for an ice-cold beverage or pool games for the kiddos.

Do you have resorts in your area? Look for resort day passes for access to their pools for guests not staying on property.

Head to the Lake

Another option for cooling off in the water is heading to the lake and some have great beaches for swimming to cool off on a hot day. Another thing to consider is renting a boat and trying your hand at tubing, water skiing or wakeboarding, depending on the age group of your party.

If you haven’t tried stand up paddleboarding, this is another great option! You can choose to sit and relax or stand and work on your balancing skills, which is usually a great way to cool off, haha.

Head to the River

Another fun option is floating the river in an innertube. Single or tandem innertubes are available, depending on your needs and desires. Some rivers even have shuttle buses in popular areas that’ll take you back to your car at the end of your float for a small fee.

Also, a fun river sport for cooling off in the summer heat is white water rafting. There are different classes of rapids to suit various skill and comfort levels, including tours for beginners, so check with local tour companies.

Stay cool - Enjoy the water - pool-activities, lake activities, river activities, waterparks, water games and toys

Head to the Ocean

Some coastlines inherently have cooler ocean breezes allowing you to relax in the sand while enjoying the water views and soothing sounds of the ocean from your comfy beach chair.

Others offer warm air with inviting water for activities like bodyboarding. Snorkeling is a blast, especially in areas that boast interesting underwater wildlife. If you’re feeling adventurous and want a good workout, book a surf lesson and ride the waves.

Head to the Water Park

Water parks are great for the whole family. Cabana rentals are often available for relaxing in a comfortable shaded area. Wave pools and lazy rivers offer a good time for all.  Some also have splash pads and other amusement for small children. I haven’t forgotten about waterslides, which are often the highlight of many water parks. Waterslide intensity varies from chaotic and crazy to short and sweet. There’s something for everyone, making this option a perfect way to beat the summer heat.

Enjoy Water Toys or Games

There’s a lot of ways to keep children cool and entertained at home in the heat of summer. Water balloon fights are a lot of fun and they now make hose attachments that allow you to fill up multiple balloons at once.

Don’t forget about the infamous slip and slide. You can find models that have body boards to soften the blow (and lesson the injuries) when taking off down the slide.

Finally, let’s not forget about the sprinkler! Running through the sprinkler is a classic summer activity that keeps kids amused and having a great time in the summer heat.

Enjoy Refreshing Food/Beverages

Consume lightweight food and drinks to stay cool this summer. There’s a lot of options out there, so take a peek below for some “cool” ideas.

Enjoy Chilled or Frozen Treats

Stay Cool - Refreshing Treats - Ice Cream or Gelato, Frozen Yogurt, Chilled Watermelon, Frozen Grapes or Blueberries, Popsicles

Take an outing to get your favorite ice cream or gelato. Frozen yogurt shops are another fun option and usually have lots of exciting and interesting options for toppings from fruit and nuts to candy, marshmallows, chocolate, caramel and more.

Fresh chilled watermelon is always a great summer treat or try freezing grapes or blueberries to munch on in the heat. They’re delightful!

Popsicles are a refreshing treat and are much healthier when made at home. Check out these super tasty and Healthy Homemade Popsicles with Blueberry and Mango.

Enjoy a Chilled Beverage

Stay Cool - Refreshing Beverages - Fruit Infused Water, Sparkling Water with Lemon, Lemonade, Tropical Cocktail, Ice-cold Beer

Treat yourself to an ice-cold beverage to cool off at the core. Try fruit infused water by simply adding citrus or pineapple and mint. Sparkling water with lemon is another great choice. Adding fruit to your water offers natural electrolytes that help keep you hydrated and feeling good in the heat.

Lemonade’s another refreshing choice. Add some muddled strawberries or raspberries to your lemonade for a little extra flavor.

A tropical cocktail or ice-cold beer is always a fun choice while sitting on a sandy beach or by the pool, just make sure to stay hydrated!

Enjoy Indoor Air-Conditioned Activities

Don’t fret if it’s just too hot to be outside and you’re still not sure how to stay cool in hot weather! There’s a lot of fun to be had indoors in the A/C! Let’s look at a few ideas.

Head to an Escape Room

Use your puzzle solving skills in an escape room. You’ll be placed in a locked room and work together with others in your party to solve a series of puzzles to make your escape in a predetermined amount of time.

Head out for Some Indoor Mini Golf

Cool off inside while enjoying a little friendly competition playing some indoor mini golf. Some locations even have glow in the dark courses for added fun.

How to Stay Cool in Hot Weather - Air-Conditioned Activities - Escape Room, Indoor Mini Golf, Bowling, Shopping

Head to the Bowling Alley

Venture over to your local bowling alley for some family-friendly fun in the cool air. Grab a cold soda and work on turning those spares into strikes.

Head to the Mall

Find an indoor mall and do a little shopping in the A/C. If your shopping list is empty, grab a friend and do some window shopping. You’ll enjoy quality time with a buddy and get your steps in for a little exercise.

Enjoy Higher Elevation

When it’s just plain hot at home and you feel like getting out of dodge, finding higher elevation usually means lower temperatures.

Head to the Mountains

Heading to higher elevation often allows you to be outside at more comfortable temperatures when it’s scorching down the big hill. Pitch a tent or rent a cabin and make it a weekend evet. Go for a hike or nature walk and get some exercise.

How to Stay Cool in Hot Weather - Head to Mountains - Camp, Rent a Cabin, Hike or Nature Walk, Meteor Shower

Perseids is a meteor shower visible in the Northern Hemisphere that peaks around Aug 11th-13th and is incredible to watch, especially in higher elevations away from city lights. Head outside and look up once it’s completely dark for a spectacular show of meteors streaking across the sky.

Thank you for coming along as we looked at how to stay cool in the hot weather. Which is your favorite and what other ways do you like to stay cool? Let me know in the comments below!

Best things to do Memorial Day Weekend when Staying in Town

1. BBQ or Cookout

This one’s a longstanding tradition for many Americans, so gather family and friends and grill up some chicken or steak in a backyard barbeque. Consider making it a potluck and have everyone bring their favorite side dish. Turn on some music, get out the cornhole boards, and go for a swim if you have a pool.

Continue the BBQ into the evening. Roast some marshmallows and tell stories around the fire pit. You’ll find a backyard cookout is a great way to spend quality time and create memories with your favorite people on Memorial Day.

2. Attend a Memorial Day Event in Your Area

Check for events in your local town or nearby city as many host Memorial Day ceremonies or parades. If you check ahead of time, you may be able to volunteer at the events.

Other fun local events to look out for include concerts, 5k runs, or even the occasional pancake breakfast. Take a peek at what’s going on in your area.

3. Head Out to the Farm

Some local farms have a lot to offer visitors. You can often view or even interact with farm animals, which is a hit amongst children. Some have little train rides or play areas for kids or kids at heart. Picking produce is a great way to enjoy farm fresh fruits and veggies and is a fun opportunity for children to learn where their food comes from.

Also, some farms have stores where you can pick up tasty sauces and sweet jams. They may even serve fresh baked goods or full meals. You might even find little shops with handmade crafts and décor to take home for that redecorating project we’ll talk about next.

4. DIY Home Project

Is there a space inside your home that could use a facelift? If a small bathroom needs new flooring or you like to build a garden bed or new shelf, Youtube has some great instructional videos. Does your pantry need some reorganizing or couldyour guest room use a little redecorating? Consider jumping on Pinterest for endless fun ideas.

If possible, get the whole family involved. Turn on some peppy music and get out the snacks to keep everyone energized. Order some pizza or head out to dinner as a little reward when the project is complete.

5. Watch a Movie

Grab the popcorn and watch a movie this holiday weekend.

If you feel like heading out to the theater for a movie, consider upgrading to the large, reclining seats for extra comfort. Some locations even offer in-theater food and beverage service if you don’t feel like waiting in line for those tasty treats and sodas.

Another option is sprawling out on the comfort of your own cozy couch and streaming a movie of your choosing. You can even make it a movie marathon if you’re in need of a lazy day off.

Also, in thinking about the true meaning of the holiday, consider a movie that honors those that gave their lives for our freedom. There’s a lot to choose from!

6. Board or Card Games

When was the last time you played a card or board game? I don’t know about you, but we always end up in stiches, laughing it up with good friends and family when we engage in a little friendly competition. Sit around the table, enjoy a tasty beverage and pull out the snacks to add to the fun.

7. Spend a Day at the Park

Head to the park for a fun and relaxing day. Bring the football or baseball for a leisurely game of catch. Try your hand at flying a kite or play a game of pig or horse with the basketball. Perhaps your local park has some trails to enjoy a bike ride or a nice walk for some light exercise. Consider packing up the picnic basket or cooler with everyone’s favorite sandwiches to enjoy a nice lunch with the family.

8. Decorate the Graves of Veterans for Memorial Day

The first Memorial Day was just after the Civil War. It was originally called Decoration Day and the tradition was to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. This is something many still do today.

So, consider celebrating Memorial Day this year by taking part in this special and important tradition, decorating a veteran’s grave with a flag and/or flowers. Take an Interest in the Mother’s Day Activity or Outing

If mom chose a movie you’re not into or you don’t like shopping, take an interest in it anyway. Ask her if she liked the movie and what her favorite part was or patiently wait while she tries on dresses or shoes. It’ll mean a lot to her.

Participate in Active Listening

Engage in conversation with your mom. Really listen to her when she’s speaking and show her you’re listening by facing her, nodding and looking at her when she speaks. Positive body language goes a long way in showing you care.

15 Ways to Ease Post-Vacation Blues after Spring Break Travel

15 Ways to Ease Post-Vacation Blues after Spring Break Travel

Post-vacation blues will fade away with these tips and tricks that’ll keep your memories alive and help you transition back to everyday life.

Several years ago, my husband earned a trip to Hawaii through work, and we were fortunate enough to fly to paradise that spring mostly on the company’s dime.  It was my first time there and upon our return home to a cold, wet and gloomy Oregon, I came down with the post-vacation blues.

When we got home, my every-day reality felt depressing. I just wanted to go back, or LIVE there!  I started looking at real estate and dreaming about how we could make the move, but soon came back to reality and instead started thinking about how I could bring a little Hawaii to our humble Oregon abode.

A few days later, in an effort to climb out of the funk I was in, I decided to make a tropical dinner that reminded me of Hawaii.  My hubby and I turned on some Hawaiian music and found a live webcam close to where we stayed looking right at the ocean.

Just as we were finishing dinner the doorbell rang.  I kid you not, it was a delivery of chocolate covered macadamia nuts, just in time for dessert.  My husband’s boss sent them to thank my husband for his hard work the previous year and they just happened to arrive at the PERFECT time!

Later that night, we got back on the webcam to watch the sunset.  It made for a great date night. It cheered me up and was a fun way to transport ourselves back to Hawaii and ease those post-vacation woes.

Over time, embracing the memories and letting the vacation live on at home sent the blues packing.

What are Post-Vacation Blues?

Did your vacation give you a chance to get away from the everyday stresses of life? Maybe you experienced a new place or an epic adventure, or perhaps you had well needed quality time with family, friends or loved ones.

Whatever it was that captured your soul on your recent vacation, if you’re back home facing reality, and feeling downright depressed, post-vacation blues may be the culprit. Are you experiencing any of the following?

  • Not wanting to leave your vacation destination and dreading going home
  • Re-thinking your every-day life or feeling like you want to move to the destination where you spent your vacation
  • Feeling extra tired or fatigued
  • Experiencing a loss of interest in regular activities
  • Feeling sad or moody
  • Changes in appetite

Sure, most aren’t excited for their vacation to end, but for some it goes deeper than that. So, if you’re feeling blue, come with me and we’ll explore some ideas to help you embrace you travel memories, transition back to real life and experience a little joy along the way.

How to Ease Post-Vacation Blues

1. Tell Someone About Your Vacation

Give a friend or family member a call and tell them about your vacation. Perhaps you know someone who’s been to the same location and you can exchange stories and experiences.  Tell them about what you hope to do on a future trip.

Also, reminisce about the vacation with your friends or family that you traveled with. Exchange pictures and ask them what their favorite part of the trip was. Although the excursion is over, the memories stay with you and can help turn the sadness to joy.

2. Research the History and Culture of the Destination

Did you visit any museums or historical sites or attend any cultural events at your vacation destination? Further research the history and find out more about the people, culture and what makes them who they are today.

3. Print Photos from Your Trip

Find some of your favorite pictures from the trip. Print them up and put them in a fun frame. Display them on a wall or shelf at home or put one on your desk at work.

4. Create a Picture Album, Slideshow or Video

Put time aside to organize your pictures in a fun way so you can look back on the memories often. Creating a digital picture album can be a lot of fun.

You can also turn your photos and videos into a slide show. Put an evening aside and enjoy watching it with friends and family.

5. Use a Favorite Photo as Wallpaper on Your Phone and Computer

Choose some photos to display on your phone, laptop or desktop. I prefer using a different photo for each and like to switch them out often to enjoy as many memories as possible.

6. Create a Social Media Post

Sharing your experience on social media is a great way to reflect on your trip and engage with others. You may learn others have spent time in the same location. Some social media platforms show memories on the anniversary of when you post, which are always fun to look back on.

7. Watch Movies, TV Shows or Videos Filmed in the Area You Visited

Look up movies or TV Shows filmed in the location you visited. Search YouTube to find creators that visit or even live in the area.

When we got home from my first Hawaiian vacation, I found a YouTuber that lived on Maui. She walked around and filmed life out and about and it was fun to see what it was like to live there. I often found myself watching one of her videos while eating breakfast and sipping on coffee before work. It felt like a mini vacation before heading out to my car in the rain!

8. Make a Meal and/or Beverage that Reminds You of Your Vacation Destination

Did you have a favorite meal or a tasty beverage while you were traveling? Look up some recipes and ease post-vacation blues by recreating them at home. It’s fun to learn new recipes and you never know, they may become new staples in your home.

9. Find a Live Webcam in the Area You Vacationed

Look around online for a live webcam located in your travel destination. As mentioned earlier, we found one at a Hawaiian resort close to where we stayed when we arrived home.

10. Listen to Music that Reminds You of Your Travel Location

Did you enjoy any music that represents the culture of your travel destination, or did you have music playing while you were there that reminds you of the vacation? Make a playlist you can listen to while having dinner or exercising.

11. Find a Scent that Represents the Location You Visited

Did you know the sense of smell is closely tied to memory? Find a scent that reminds you of where you visited and you’ll be transported back to your happy place. Ideas include  a candle, lotion, room spray, perfume, or even a fruit or spice.

12. Start Planning a Return Trip

Even if you’re unable to go back for a long time, start planning now. It’s never too early to start saving. You can start a travel savings account or piggy bank. Do some research now and make itineraries. Half of the fun is in the planning and anticipation!

13. Plan a Small Local Getaway or Fun Activity

Try planning a night or two away within driving distance or find something fun to do locally. Sporting events, concerts, or going to a movie you’ve been looking forward to can cheer you up. Perhaps there’s even a restaurant locally that serves the cuisine from the location you traveled to.

14. Write Down What You are Thankful For

Try writing down 10 things you are thankful for, with half being vacation related and half being what you’re grateful for in everyday life. Although it’s fun to reflect on your vacation and even plan the next one, it’s good to be present and content right where you’re at.

15. Talk with Someone About How Your Post-Vacation Blues

For some, post-vacation blues may not be so easily cured. If you find yourself having a hard time transitioning back to everyday life and feel a longer-term depression setting in, please speak to your doctor or a professional counselor and be assured that better days are ahead for you!
